And of course, when they give you a gold medal, you're just hooked right there. Sanddal, who hails from Helena, Montana, is competing in nine swimming events. Since she turned 100 in August, she’s already broken one world record in the 200 freestyle and set at least four new world records in her age category, according to a news release from the World Senior Games.

I want the currents of life to toss me around, shake me up and leave me feeling washed clean. I want my hard edges to soften as the years pass—made not weak but supple. I want to ride the waves, go with the flow, feel the impact of the surging tides rolling in and out. A memorial service will be held this spring, once the wonderful flowing water, flowers and grasses return to the Montana mountains Charlotte loved so much. It seemed that Sands’ Boston Calling performance was destined to work out regardless of the roadblocks she faced on the way there. Just minutes after her set concluded and the crowd dispersed, a severe weather warning led to the evacuation of the Harvard Athletic Complex along with a three hour delay. As her set continued, audience engagement only intensified in a testament to Sands’s impressive songwriting and vibrant onstage presence. Aside from a few hardcore fans who came equipped with signs and memorized lyrics, many in the audience were new to Sands’ music. However, the artist proved her musical prowess to new and old fans alike as she won the crowd over.
After Helena's Charlotte Sanddal retired from her job as a social worker evaluating nursing homes for the state of Montana, her friend Flora Wong suggested she start competitive swimming. His interview series, The Future of Advice® features conversations with industry leaders and entrepreneurs who are disrupting the wealth management industry. Charlotte said it’s hard to believe she’s been around a century now, but she doesn’t try to make a big deal out of it. Nevertheless, she has enjoyed the celebrations, such as a 100th birthday parade in Helena’s Downtown Walking Mall last month and a reunion with her children. These occasions are nice, but, for Charlotte, she said every day feels like a celebration.

Sanddal will have competed in nine events by the time the Games conclude Oct. 15. Sanddal employs a technique many swimmers use — on either their arm or thigh, they create in ink a sort of grid that lists the event they’re swimming, as well as the heat and lane to which they’ve been assigned. At the urging of a friend, she jumped in the pool, and her first trip to the top of the podium came at the Montana Senior Games when she swam against — herself.
